Frequently Asked Questions

What is Whey Protein?

Whey Protein is a high-quality protein that aids in the growth and maintenance of muscle, particularly after exercise.

Whey is the liquid part of milk that remains following cheese manufacturing. Believe it or not, it was once discarded by farmers as casein was viewed as more important.

Protein is made up of building blocks called amino acids. There are 20 amino acids, 11 of which are essential. This means we need to get them from the diet.

A high-quality whey protein should contain an approximately 3g of leucine. Leucine is viewed as a key essential amino acid for supporting muscle protein synthesis (MPS). Kinetica Whey Protein, which is sourced from grass fed cows contains 2.47g of leucine per 30g serving and it also have 5.5g of naturally occurring Branched Chain Amino Acids.

The quality of whey protein is measured in various ways, one being the protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAA). Whey Protein has a PDCAA score of 1.0 which indicates it is a high-quality protein source.

How is Whey Protein made?

Whey is a by-product of cheese manufacturing and whey protein is the various proteins that can be found in whey. Whey protein is produced from milk, with milk containing 80% casein (slow-release protein) and 20% whey (fast acting protein).

When milk begins to turn sour and separate, the proteins are split into a liquid, which is the whey, and the lumps which is the casein.

Who should take Whey Protein?

Whey Protein can be consumed by a variety of people, not just elite athletes. So, if you are a weekend warrior, play field sports or someone on a weight loss programme, taking whey can be beneficial for supporting your goals.

What are the benefits of taking Whey Protein?

Whey Protein has many benefits, such as aiding recovery following exercise. It is an important macronutrient for repair when the muscle has become damaged, and it is also essential for muscle growth.

Increasing protein intake when injured is important for preventing muscle loss. Individuals on a weight loss programme should increase their protein intake significantly above the RDA of 0.8g per kilogram of bodyweight. Aiming for 0.3g-0.5g per kilogram of body to maximise muscle growth.

The timing of protein intake is important and ideally should be spread evenly across each meal. The type of protein and the total amount of protein is also important. These a commonly knowing as the 3 T’s.

Can whey protein help with weight gain?

To gain weight, one needs to increase energy intake over energy expenditure. This means eating more calories than you would expend. If you want to increase lean body mass as opposed to fat mass, it is important to increase your protein and carbohydrate intake and not your fat intake.

Kinetica Oatgain is the ideal product for getting additional calories into your diet. It contains of 600kcals per 160g serving. Oat gain contains 80g over carbohydrates while the protein content is 45g per serving. The sugar content is 6.4g, which is just over a teaspoon of sugar.

Although, nutrition plays a key role when it comes to building lean mass, it is important to stimulate the muscle by stressing it, this occurs by performing resistance training that will help you become stronger and fitter.

Aiming for 1.6g – 2.2g of protein per kg of bodyweight will help with building lean muscle. If your looking for a lean whey, why not try our lean active protein.
