What is Collagen?
Collagen is a type of protein that is produced within the body. It acts as a natural protective structure that helps strengthen and hold connective tissues together in areas such as tendons, joints and ligaments.
Read our blog which details what collagen is and how it can help your health and performance.
What are the different sources of Collagen?
The main sources of Collagen are Bovine and Marine collagen. Bovine collagen is produced by cows and marine collagen is produced from fish. Bovine Collagen contains both type I and type III collagen - both of which are found extensively in the human body versus Marine Collagen which usually only contains type I collagen. Bovine Collagen is easily absorbed by the body, as it's the closest form of collagen to that found in humans.
If you want to learn more you can read our blog outlining what is bovine collagen and its benefits.
What are the different types of Collagen?
Collagen can be purchased in either liquid, powder or even tablet format. None of these formats necessarily supersede the other, it all depends on the formulation and supporting ingredients so if that remained the same it really just comes down to consumer preference.
On a more granular level, there are three different types of Collagen:
Type I: Is the most abundant form and occurs mostly in your skin, hair and bones as well your tendons and ligaments. It provides structure to all of these areas and it’s function is to resist tension
Type II: This is a key component of joint cartilage which cushions the joints and makes up a substantial amount of skin. It’s function is also to resist tension.
Type III: Similar to type I collagen, it helps to maintain structure and is found in your muscles, vessels, arteries and organs, including your gut. Studies have shown that it’s important in skin recovery, healing and elasticity.
